Rnd 15 Preview - Wests vs Newtown

In what appears to be the match of the round on paper, the Western Suburbs Magpies will play host to the inform Newtown Jets. After somewhat of an inconsistent start to their 2010 campaign, the Jets seem to have finally found their feet and as a result come into this one on the back of a four game winning streak. In contrast the Magpies have probably gone the other way a little bit, having lost two of their last three and they required some late Junior Moors magic against the Vulcans last week to get out of jail.

Clearly the depth at the Jets is strong at present and this allows them to field quality NRL talent like Aiden Guerra, James Aubusson and Martin Kennedy. The Magpies own depth has been tested and once again they will field an experimental halves pairing with Rhys Pritchard taking his turn in the number six jersey.

The last time these sides met they played out an enthralling 18 all draw at Henson Park. No doubt the Magpies will feel that was one that got away from them as they scored four tries to three but some wayward goal kicking proved costly in the end. They will also be happy that Kane Linnett is not named to play following his recent elevation to the NRL, as Linnett scored all three of Newtown’s tries that day. Newtown has slightly the best of the attacking statistics however that is tempered by Wests dominance in the defensive columns. Nothing could separate these two sides last time they met and if conditions are kind in Campbelltown on Saturday afternoon, this has the potential to be one of the matches of the year.

Rnd 14 Match Preview - Wests v Auckland

In what is shaping as one of the matches of the round, an in form Vulcans side crosses the Tasman to take on a wounded Magpies outfit. After being a permanent fixture in the top two for most of the season, the Magpies have slipped to third following back to back losses at the hands of the Storm and the Bulldogs respectively.

The Vulcans will arrive at Campbelltown with high hopes as they are riding the wave of a four game winning streak and would fancy their chances of extending that to five. The Magpies continue to tinker with their halves after losing Nathan Waters (injured) and this week it will be Liam Ayoub’s turn in the number seven jersey while Magpies legend John Skandalis continues his latest comeback and will make his first run on appearance come Saturday. The Vulcans have lost playmakers Isaac John and Joel Moon to the Warriors in recent weeks but the stellar form of Pita Godinet at halfback continues to be the glue which holds this side together and he is being supported up front by a forward pack that is as creative as it is strong. The Magpies will be desperate to right the ship and perhaps some home cooking will be the recipe they require but it won’t be a given as this Vulcans team is full of confidence and an upset may be on the cards.

Round 13 Preview - Wests vs Canterbury

Fourth plays host to second here in what could be the match of the round. The Magpies came away from Olympic Park with no competition points last week after going down to the Storm 36-18, while the Bulldogs turned their recent indifferent form around as they comprehensively took care of Wentworthville 42-22 at Ringrose Park.

Ben Barba is this week’s Teamm8 Player of the Week, courtesy of a blinding display against Wenty last week and Bulldogs fans will be keen for a similar display at home.
Interestingly enough, through 13 rounds of the NSW Cup these two sides are yet to have met but considering their places on the ladder and similar statistics, you would hazard a guess there won’t be much between them come fulltime.
Another interesting sidenote to this match is the inclusion of Western Suburbs legend, John Skandalis who made a surprise appearance off the bench last week against the Storm. From all reports Skando has lost none of his trademark grit and determination and should prove to be a handful for any defender.
