NSW Cup Round 1 Preview - Fibros v Silvertails

What a great day it should be at Lidcombe Oval this Saturday when the Fibros take on the Silvertails. One of the great aspects of the VB NSW Cup is that tradition has not been sacrificed for the mighty dollar and our foundation clubs still get to play high quality rugby league at great grounds like Leichhardt Oval, Henson Park, North Sydney Oval and now Lidcombe Oval. Both of these sides have seen changes in the coaching ranks during the off season with Sea Eagles legend Cliff Lyons taking over at Manly and Trevor Schodel handed the reins out west. Talk emanating out of Campbelltown is that despite the clubs well documented issues over the past few months, this squad is galvanised and ready to take on all comers. The Sea Eagles had a tough first year back in the Cup last season but they did show some signs late in the year that their best was yet to come and perhaps we will see that in 2012.

Talking Point: Tradition lives here – We already touched on it above but you have to love the ‘romance’ that comes with the VB NSW Cup. We have Henson Park, Leichhardt and North Sydney Oval, Belmore, WIN Stadium and now Lidcombe once again. The cycling track that surrounds Lidcombe Oval is still there although the tallest goal posts in the southern hemisphere are no more. The Wests Magpies Harold Matthews and SG Ball sides will play in the curtain raisers out there so each and every one of you Magpies fans need to head out for what should be a very special day.

Prediction: Both of these sides were arguably playing their best football of the year at the back end of last season, so the question is which one can pick up where they left off? The Sea Eagles side looks slightly more settled in terms of player turnover and that may well get them over the line in a classic. Sea Eagles by 6.
