Tad Bits of Magpie Pride

"There was not one Wests player I did not want to play with... not one dud. I loved Wests. It is the greatest club in the world. To put on a Wests Jumper is equal to wearing an Australian jumper." Noel Kelly

"We're going to be competitive and we're going to find that Western Suburbs spirit. We are going to make clubs hate coming to Campbelltown... they'll just hate it." Tom Raudonikis

"There is nothing sweeter in the world than the smell of silvertail blood through a broken nose" J. Donnelly, Lidcombe Oval 1978

(Arthur Mountier pictured)

"Training was conducted in the twilight, and dressing room amenities consisted of one shed - with one cold shower recess. Light was provided by either kerosene lamps or by candlelight. The wives of Ted Mead and Bill Elliot took it in turns to supply the candles." - Rugby League Wests Style 1908

Wests were the first Rugby League Club in Australia to officially adopt a mascot. In 1928 they officially became known as the Western Suburbs Magpies.

I would say to Dallas in the dressing room, " I do not know if you are tough enough to handle these blokes."
Dallas blood would boil. There were times when I knew I was one second away from a smack in the jaw.- Roy Masters, first grade coach 1978-81

"I played every game in 1939 and I got 17 pounds, 7 shillings and 7 pense. We would have played for nothing - the club spirit was fantastic. I loved the blokes I played with. I loved it at Wests'' Jimmy Sharman Jnr

Wests started the 1933 season in fine style winning 4 and drawing one of their first 6 matches. It was then that the Kangaroo tourists left for England.

The Magpies lost virtually their entire backline when Frank McMillan, Cliff Pearce, Alan Ridley, Les Mead and Vic Hey where selected to tour. Wests would not win another game and collected the wooden spoon.

With all of their stars back on deck Wests turned the tables and won the 1934 premiership. The first and only team to do so in First Grade.

Every time a team raises the NRL Premiership Trophy they are raising a part of Wests.

The famous trophy features an embrace of Arthur Summons (Wests) and Norm Provan (St George) after the wet and muddy 1963 grand final.

The 50th anniversary of this event will be celebrated this year.

Leo's role includes recruitment.

We are lucky to have the following volunteers working with us at each training session - Dave and Valerie Mc Ewan, Bluey Schafer, Jeff Aplitt, Horrie Jowsey, Charlie Tuxford and John Harbon. They are a great help to Leo and give up many hours of their spare time. :hey:

Leo Epifania returns as Western Suburbs Magpies coach

The Western Suburbs Magpies are pleased to announce that Leo "The Ledge" Epifania will coach our Ron Massey Cup (formerly called the Bundaberg Red Cup) team in 2013.

Leo is a Magpie man through and through with black and white blood pumping through his veins. A former Wests junior from Enfield Federals who played Presidents Cup in the early 80's for Wests before being graded in what was then called third grade in 1983 and making his first grade debut in 1984 and playing on until 1986. After playing and coaching stints in France, England and NSW Country he eventually returned to Wests to coach the Jersey Flegg side from 2004-06 then the NSW Cup side from 2007-2011. In 2012 he was assistant coach at Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood.

Welcome home Leo.

Group 6 Clubs Recruiting Well

NATHAN Hindmarsh has officially confirmed he will play for the Moss Vale Dragons this year and will be on the field for their first match of the season.
The Dragons will take on local rivals Mittagong Lions at Community Oval on March 24 and Moss Vale president Greg Maloney said the match was a priority for Hindmarsh.

Hindmarsh agreed to play for the Dragons in early December last year, but finalised his contract details closer to Christmas.

Maloney said it was a massive boost for the club after they struggled last season and could only field a second division team.

While his commitments to Fox Sports and the NRL will prevent him from playing every match throughout the season, Maloney said he would be available for most games.

The club's Ross Webb said it was not only about his contribution on the field but what he could teach the younger players.

"The big thing with Nathan playing is not only what he brings as a player but what he and Scott Geddes will be able to teach young players like Aaron Cummings, Jordan Grey, Jack Webb plus our under-18s side," he said.

"Put these players with the likes of Josh Champion, Damian Barton, Brett Cummings and Matt Conquest and things are looking very strong for the Dragons to put a competitive side on the park for 2013."

Andrew Bowie who has stepped into the role of first grade coach, previously played with Hindmarsh and also former South Sydney Rabbitoh Scott Geddes who will also be joining the club for 2013.

The big name stars have already attracted a number of players back to the club including halfback Shane Martin, Elliot Esquilant and Nick Wilkinson who returned from overseas.

Robert Wiya will also return from a shoulder injury he sustained in 2010.

"Things are looking quite bright for the club and I can see us fielding three good sides and being highly competitive. A few big names will make it interesting for spectators," Maloney said.

Training for Moss Vale starts this week on Tuesday nights (Lackey Park) and Friday Nights (Community Oval) at 6pm.

Meanwhile former wests magpies and wests tigers players Rocky Trimarchi & Shannon Gallant have reportedly signed with Narellan. Last years premiers and clayton cup holders East Campbelltown have remained largely unchanged but have lost fullback will dreves who is trialing with mounties whilst have made a play to sign Narellan player Ben Baker to cover his spot. Oakdale have recruited back 2011 premiership winning coach Brendan Reeves and will have former east campbelltown coach jason hazelton as his assistant.
Picton has also announced former wests magpies junior player Bryce Poisel will captain coach the first grade side and will be ably assisted by club veteran and stalwart Gary Dowse, they have resigned Kiel Shephard and Chris Young, prop Chris Bowers returning after a year at Kiama and halfback/hooker Tim Dengate from the Penrith Panthers  U20's .
Whilst nothing official from the club ,its reported via social media that Camden have installed former bulldogs player Mitch Newton as coach and will have another former team mate in Brent Sherwin as his assistant. The Oaks tigers have locked in league journeyman Leo Dynevor as first grade coach. Campbelltown City have reappointed Drew Dalton as captain coach and are currently in negoiations with players signings, they have however signed former oaks tigers winger nick sbezzi.
Appin are having a crack at first grade after many years as a 2nd division club and will be coached by former group 6 referee glen whiteman. Mittagong will be coached again by Scott Borg but have no news to report regarding their recrutiment. Thirlmere will be coached again by Dane Wooden but looks like they have lost their start signings from last year the Trotter Brothers who have linked with cabramatta this year.

Bundy Cup becomes Ron Massey Cup

THE long-neglected NSW Cup is set to receive a welcome profile boost in 2013, with weekly matches to be televised live as NRL curtain-raisers.

The Daily Telegraph has learned negotiations between the NSWRL and Fox Sports are well advanced to broadcast a selected match every round, which would herald the return of the traditional three-match program. The preferred timeslot for live broadcasts is 1.30pm on Saturday, before NYC and NRL fixtures at the same venue. The deal goes some way toward restoring the prestige of the senior feeder competition, which has languished in suburban and provincial ovals since the NYC's birth in 2008. But there could be further progress for the
NSW Cup beyond next year, with former NZRL boss Jim Doyle yesterday appointed to conduct a review of all feeder competitions. NRL club bosses have already made their preference for open-age football clear, believing it should replace under-20s matches as the established curtain-raiser.

The NSWRL has also confirmed the third-tier Bundaberg Cup will be re-named the Ron Massey Cup in response to the rum giant quitting its sponsorship at the end of this year.

Back in 2010 the television series Barefoot Rugby League came along to the Magpies NSW Cup training at Durrant Oval. With interviews from Steve Reeves, Chris Corby, George Keppa and Leo Epifania. Its definitely well worth watching again.
